The rider’s suitcase

To disassemble a bicycle, it is useful to have a set of specific tools that will allow you to remove and repair the various parts of the bicycle.

Here is a list of common tools needed to disassemble a bicycle:

  • Allen wrenches: Allen wrenches of different sizes are essential for removing bicycle screws and bolts. Make sure you have a set that covers the most common sizes, such as 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm.
  • Wrench: An adjustable wrench is useful for removing non-standard size bolts or tightening bicycle parts.
  • Screwdrivers: You will need different sizes of screwdrivers, both flat and Phillips, to remove screws and make other small repairs.
  • Crank wrench: A crank wrench is needed to remove cranks from the bicycle frame.
  • Chain tools: A chain puller is essential for removing the chain pin and disassembling the chain so you can clean or replace the chain.
  • Bottom bracket wrench: If you need to remove the bottom bracket, make sure you have the right wrench for your specific setup.
  • Hub wrench: You may need a hub wrench to remove or adjust wheel hubs.
  • Brake and derailleur adjustment tools: These may include specific wrenches to adjust the brakes and derailleurs, as well as a wheel centering tool to make sure the wheels are aligned properly.
  • Torque wrench: A torque wrench is essential for applying the correct torque to critical screws and bolts such as those on cranks, bottom bracket, handlebars, derailleur adjustments, and brakes. Be sure to set the wrench to the correct torque recommended by the manufacturer to avoid damage to bicycle parts.
  • Lubricants and grease: Make sure you have grease to grease the bearings and bottom bracket, as well as a good lubricant for the chain and other moving parts. We recommend using our Lube1 or Lube2 if you are fond of long rides and also use your bicycle during wetter and colder seasons such as fall and winter.
  • Degreaser: Another useful bike maintenance product is a degreaser such as our Super Cleaner, suitable for cleaning the bike after a fun, long ride.
  • With these tools on hand, you will be able to disassemble and repair your bicycle for routine maintenance or to replace damaged parts. Always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and have a good understanding of how your bicycle works before starting any disassembly work.
