Mtb or gravel: which to choose?

If you have reached the point where you feel it is time to take a leap, you are probably considering buying a new bike. You have already ridden, perhaps on a city bike, an old mountain bike or even a road bike. But now you feel the need for something more suited to your style, the rides you dream of doing and, why not, new challenges.

And here comes the question: better a MTB or a gravel bike?

The answer is not so simple, because both have fascinating features. But the key to choosing is to understand what kind of cyclist you are today and what kind you want to become tomorrow.

You like to explore… but how?

Both bikes are born for exploration, but in different ways.

The mountain bike is for those who like to get their hands – and tyres – dirty on forest trails, single tracks, rocky descents, roots, tight turns and adrenaline. It is the bike for those seeking direct contact with nature, even on technical and challenging trails.

The gravel bike, on the other hand, is the ideal companion for those who enjoy long rides, perhaps between hills and dirt roads, with the wind in your face and the desire to cover many kilometres in comfort. It is less extreme, faster on asphalt, but ready to take you far even when the asphalt runs out.

The gravel bike: freedom and versatility

In recent years, the gravel bike has won over many cyclists precisely because of its ability to adapt to different contexts. You can use it to go to work, for a weekend outing or even to travel with panniers in tow. The geometries are comfortable, the tyres wide enough to cope with gravel and dirt roads, but still smooth on asphalt.

If you like the idea of doing mixed roads, maybe starting from home and arriving on a nice stretch in the countryside without having to load the bike in the car, the gravel bike is a natural choice.

The MTB: technique, fun, adventure

If, however, you feel the call of the woods, of the trails, of steep climbs followed by descents where your heart beats faster… then it is difficult for anything to beat a good MTB. The suspension, the wide handlebars, the powerful brakes: everything invites you to play with the terrain.

It’s not the fastest bike on the road, that much is clear. But if what you are looking for is technical fun, pure experience, and you also want to improve your riding skills, then the mountain bike is your ally.

How to really decide

If you are reading this article, you are probably already well advanced in your evaluations. Perhaps you’ve already seen a few models online, or you’ve lost yourself in YouTube videos between gravel excursions and MTB descents. And that’s all well and good. But before you click “buy”, try to think:

  • Where do you ride most often?
  • How many kilometres do you usually ride?
  • Do you like a steady pace and long views, or do you prefer fatigue and technique on rougher terrain?
  • Are you interested in a multi-purpose bike, perhaps for travelling or commuting?

There is no right answer for everyone, and in the end there is no perfect bike: there is a perfect bike for you.

If you love the idea of long-distance adventure, alternating between asphalt and light dirt, and perhaps dream of a bike trip, a gravel bike is probably the most suitable choice. It offers you comfort, speed, and great versatility.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a bike you can play with on the terrain, tackle technical trails, or if you live in an area with lots of off-road trails, then a mountain bike will give you satisfaction every time you get out of the saddle.

Whatever your choice, remember one thing: a new bike is not just a means of transport, it’s a perfect excuse to get out and discover more – about where you can go, and about yourself.
