How do i choose my bike size?

Choosing the right frame size for a bicycle is crucial for an optimal riding experience that is both comfortable and efficient.

But how do we choose the correct frame size for a bicycle?

Here are some steps you can follow to determine the right frame size for you:

1. Measure your height: Your height is the main factor in choosing your frame size. You can use the following table as a rough guide:

  •    – Height up to 160 cm: 47-50 cm frame (women’s bicycles) or 49-52 cm frame (men’s bicycles).
  •    – Height 160-170 cm: 50-54 cm frame (women’s bikes) or 52-56 cm frame (men’s bikes).
  •    – Height 170-180 cm: Frame size 54-58 cm (women’s bikes) or 56-60 cm (men’s bikes).
  •    – Height over 180 cm: Frame from 58 cm upwards (women) or 60 cm upwards (men).

2. Measurement of the crotch: Some people also prefer to consider the length of the leg or the size of the crotch. You can measure the distance from the ground to the groin to get an idea of the leg length. Make sure that there is sufficient space between your groin and the top tube of the frame when you are riding. Beware, however, that there are some people who have a short torso in relation to their legs. A factor you should definitely take into account when choosing the correct frame size for your bike.

3. Type of bicycle: The frame size can vary depending on the type of bicycle. For example, road bikes may have a slightly different frame than mountain bikes.

4. Road test: This is the best solution, once you have found the size.  Many bicycle shops offer the possibility of a short road test. Pay attention to comfort and riding feel on the flat as well as uphill and downhill. A bike that is too big may be unrideable at high speeds. You can also take advantage of the many trade fairs organised every year for cycling enthusiasts or the events organised by the various brands, in which case you can try out several brands over the course of a day.

5. Possible adjustments: Even if you have chosen a frame of the right size, you can make further adjustments such as the height of the saddle, width and length of the handlebars, to customise your riding position. These are small adjustments that for a few euros (but depend on the components chosen) can help you improve your riding position.

6. Professional advice: If you have doubts or encounter difficulties in choosing your frame size, seek professional advice from your trusted retailer or a biomechanic. A saddle test will help you find the right frame size for your chosen bike type and brand.

Always remember that choosing a frame size is an individual process, and a correct size will contribute to comfort and performance while riding. The correct choice of frame size can make the difference between a correct purchase and a completely incorrect one, seriously compromising the riding experience.
