Among road cyclists, there is one topic capable of dividing group rides on any given weekend: tubeless conversion. Converting road bike tires to a tubeless setup—saying goodbye to the classic inner tube to make room for liquid sealant—has become standard practice in the gravel and mountain biking worlds. However, when it comes to tarmac, high pressures, and stiff frames, making the switch isn’t quite as straightforward.
Is it truly worth the expense and maintenance of going tubeless, or does the good old inner tube still have a valid place? To answer clearly, we need to analyze what actually changes when taking these wheels onto the road.
The advantages of tubeless on tarmac: comfort and zero flats
The primary reason driving more and more enthusiasts toward tubeless conversion is the near-total elimination of small punctures. Bits of glass, tacks, or road debris suddenly cease to be a threat. When a micro-puncture occurs, the air pressure forces the liquid sealant outward, sealing the damage in a fraction of a second while you keep pedaling. In most cases, you only realize you punctured after returning home.
Beyond protection, the real game-changer lies in ride comfort. Without the risk of pinch flatting the inner tube against the rim when hitting a pothole, you can run significantly lower operating pressures. This means a modern tire—perhaps 28 mm or 30 mm—can conform to rough tarmac, absorbing vibrations and delivering cornering and braking grip unattainable with traditional setups. Ultimately, the ride feels smoother and far less exhausting over long distances.
The flip side: maintenance and management
While the system sounds ideal on paper, in practice it requires a mindset shift. Going tubeless is not a “set it and forget it” solution. The sealant inside the tire inevitably dries out over time and with heat, requiring periodic top-ups every three to six months to stay effective.
The initial installation process can also intimidate anyone lacking mechanical confidence or the right gear: seating a tubeless tire often requires an immediate burst of air, achievable only with an air compressor or a specialized booster pump. Furthermore, if a sharp stone causes a deep slash, sealant alone won’t suffice. In those situations, you must intervene manually using tire plugs (“bacon strips”).
Which solution is right for you?
Deciding whether to switch to tubeless ultimately depends on how you ride and the types of roads you typically frequent.
Tubeless conversion is right for you if you log high annual mileage, enjoy riding backroads with far-from-perfect surfaces, and seek maximum comfort and grip. If you already run wider tires and don’t mind spending a bit of time on bike maintenance in your garage, the gains in rolling efficiency and peace of mind will easily outweigh the effort.
You are better off sticking with inner tubes if you ride sporadically and leave your bike sitting idle in the garage for weeks or months at a time. In that scenario, the sealant inside will simply dry out, nullifying its benefits. If you prefer a “pump and ride” approach free of liquid management, the traditional system remains unbeatable in its simplicity.
