What is the difference between Shimano sh51 and sh56 cleats

Perhaps everyone does not know that there are two different types of cleats to be used for mtb and gravel pedals. In fact, Shimano has two models of cleats in its catalog the SH51 and the SH56. If you are wondering which type of cleats you are using the answer may be very simple.

If you have never replaced your cleats and are using the ones that come with your Shimano pedals then you are definitely using the SH51s.

But what are the key differences between these two types of cleats?

Shimano SH51 and SH56 cleats are both designed for use with Shimano SPD (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics) automatic pedals, but there are some differences between them:

Release: The main difference between the two is in the release method. SH51 cleats are designed only for release by a lateral twisting motion of the foot. This means that the foot can only be released with a lateral heel movement. SH56 cleats, on the other hand, offer multi-directional release. This means that the foot can be released not only with a lateral movement of the heel, but also with a direct upward movement. This makes SH56 cleats more suitable for beginners or those who may feel more comfortable with a more versatile release option.

Versatility: SH56s offer greater release versatility than SH51s. This can be useful for cyclists who feel more confident with more release options, especially in emergency situations or when starting to use automatic pedals for the first time.

Price: In terms of cost, usually SH56 cleats can cost a little more than SH51s, mainly because of their greater versatility.

Ultimately, the choice between the two will depend on the cyclist’s individual preferences, experience with automatic pedals, and expected usage situations. More experienced users might prefer the SH51s because of their simplicity and reliability, while beginners or those seeking more versatility might opt for the SH56s.
